Three Thriving Local Franchises in Indonesia
Indonesia can surprise many visitors, as Indonesians throughout this archipelago of over 17,000 islands are both enterprising, and creative when finding business opportunities. Here are three unique examples of Indonesian-style franchises, that are continuing to expand during this second decade of the 21st century.
1. Happy Puppy Karaoke
Indonesians enjoy being entertained, and an evening with friends at a karaoke is part of the modern lifestyle most people crave. Happy Puppy is an example of how local tastes are incorporated into an international idea. Happy Puppy has a variety of karaoke rooms, with state of the art equipment, a café with serves food, and drinks, plus a store which sells the soft toys & gimmicks lady customers enjoy. This franchise has steadily crept into many of the nation’s provincial cities, after starting in Jakarta- the capital of Indonesia.
2. Steak and Shake
Steak houses are common in a variety of European and American cities, but Indonesia has developed its own variety of a steakhouse, Steak and Shake. Located in several Indonesian cities, this franchise offers low priced steaks, and fruit juices, in an open sit down atmosphere. Locally produced food is sold, as cities close to the sea, often serve fried shrimp, local fish or squid at a lower price than a chicken or beef steak.
A typical meal with a juice or a coffee, usually costs around 2 dollars per person, and is popular with families, and students. The food is healthy because it is produced locally (non- GM or cloned), and a hotplate includes one main course- Chicken, beef or fish with large French fries, and vegetables, with its own sauce. Steak n Shake is a mid-range business, which is as popular as other Western branded competitors, some urban Indonesians used to favor.
3. Veneta Systems- Refill Centers
Owning a printer is common for most urban Indonesians, but the cost of original ink can often be higher than the printer itself. This is were Veneta Systems created a new market, by offering to inject and refill any ink cartridge at a fraction of the cost of original colored or black or white ink.
A majority of Indonesians can now afford to print documents, or photographs, and Veneta can operate from any small shop, or location, as long as it resembles the original store in Jakarta.
Free enterprise is allowing countries like Indonesia to create an income for their expanding population, and encourage steady economic growth. Compared to Western Europe and the United States, were enterprise is often discouraged or stifled, in favor of a select few corporations leading to the economic problems we see today.
Indonesians are encouraged to earn their own living, and this has created a nation of entrepreneurs, rather than big business bureaucrats as seen in most deckling developed countries. Leading to continued economic growth, and the use of local labor, and resources to create an independent, open, growth driven economy.
